Roysambu Family Lives in Fear After Property Destruction by Goons

A family that has lived on a piece of land in Roysambu for over four decades now finds itself living in constant fear after their property was violently invaded and destroyed by a group of unknown assailants.

The incident has shaken the community and underscores the growing concerns over land disputes and security in urban Kenyan settings.

On January 21, 2025, the Mathee Mwangi’s family, well-known in Roysambu for their long-standing presence, were abruptly thrust into a nightmare.

Armed with pangas and machetes, a group of goons descended upon their land, demolishing buildings and fences, effectively erasing proof of ownership.

According to the family and witnesses, these individuals were not just intent on destruction but on instilling terror, as they have been reported to threaten the family and any workers associated with them.

“Hivi karibuni ikiwa tarehe 21, genge la mashamba lilituvamia. Wametudhulumu sana. Huku hatukali, hata kuna wafanyi kazi wamekatwa katwa.” A distressed family member stated.

This act of aggression has left the family, including children, unable to focus on daily life, with education and work severely disrupted.

“It has been scary for us, especially for the children. They are unable to settle, they are mentally traumatised and they don’t even want to go to school or go to play outside.” lamented another family member

The Mathee Mwangi family’s property, which included homes and agricultural land, lies in ruins, with the families too scared to rebuild or even remain on their land.

Residents have reported seeing these goons armed and patrolling the area, further escalating the family’s fear for their safety. The psychological toll on the family, especially the children, has been profound, with the constant threat of violence hanging over their heads.

The community has rallied around the family, using social media platforms like X to call out for help and justice under the hashtag #RoysambuLandGrabbers.

However, the response from local authorities has been criticized for being slow and ineffective.

There are allegations that some of these goons might be politically connected or even protected by rogue elements within the security forces, which complicates the situation further.

“Hii genge iko karibu na politicians and this is very bad. Kama mtu ako na ownership claim akuje na court documents tuone and the IG should intervene aambie Kasarani police watupee protections.” Retorted a family member.

The legal battle for Mathee Mwangi’s family is daunting. Despite having lived on the land for generations, proving ownership in the face of such violent opposition is challenging.

As Roysambu grapples with this incident, the broader implications for land rights, security, and governance in Kenya’s urban areas are clear.

The hope is that this tragedy will catalyze meaningful changes to prevent such occurrences in the future, protecting the rights and lives of those who call these places home.
