A formal complaint has been filed with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Disciplinary Committee against Hon. Teresia Wanjiru, the nominated Member of Parliament representing the youth. The complainant, Peter Kamau Karogo, accuses Wanjiru of chronic absenteeism, non-performance, and failing the youth she was appointed to serve.
Karogo’s complaint alleges that Wanjiru has consistently been absent from parliamentary sessions, preventing her from engaging in key debates and committee meetings. Her absenteeism, he argues, has stunted legislative progress on pressing youth issues like unemployment, education, and economic empowerment.
“Her failure to attend crucial sessions and contribute to legislative matters has rendered her ineffective,” Karogo stated in the complaint. “She has neglected her duty, undermining the trust of the youth who depend on her.”
In addition to absenteeism, Karogo accuses Wanjiru of a lack of accountability, claiming she has not taken responsibility for her absence. This disregard for her obligations is said to violate both the Leadership and Integrity Act and the National Assembly’s Standing Orders.
Wanjiru has been a vocal supporter of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua during the recent impeachment motion. She was a staunch defender, casting a critical ‘No’ vote when the impeachment motion was debated in Parliament. This move has fueled speculation that the complaint against her might be part of a larger political maneuver to sideline Gachagua’s allies within UDA, especially after his impeachment.
On Tuesday, October 8, Kenya’s Parliament voted overwhelmingly to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on 11 charges, including accusations of self-enrichment and inciting ethnic hatred. Gachagua has denied all the allegations, calling the case “absurd.” The Senate is set to debate the charges and vote on his potential dismissal next week.
As the UDA Disciplinary Committee prepares to review the complaint against Wanjiru i all eyes are on whether Wanjiru will lose her position. The question now remains: is this a case of negligence, or part of a deeper political strategy to remove Gachagua’s allies from power?
Only time will tell if Wanjiru’s fate will be decided by her parliamentary conduct—or her political loyalties.
