The Rising Stars kicked off their AFCON U20 CECAFA Qualifiers campaign with a gritty 2-1 win against Tanzania in Group A. The match took place at KMC Stadium in Dar es Salaam on October 6, 2024, showcasing Kenya’s resilience and determination as they secured their first three points of the tournament.

The breakthrough came in the 23rd minute when Kevin Wanganya struck a brilliant free kick from just outside the box, sending the ball past Tanzania’s goalkeeper and giving Kenya a well-deserved lead. This moment of brilliance lifted the team’s spirits, but despite pressing for more goals, they went into halftime with just a one-goal advantage.

In the second half, Kenya extended their lead in the 67th minute when Andres Odhiambo unleashed a spectacular long-range shot, making it 2-0. However, Tanzania quickly answered back, with Rahim Mkinyange finding the net in the 76th minute to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

Despite late pressure from the Tanzanian side, Kenya’s defense held strong, allowing them to secure a crucial victory.

With this win, Kenya leads Group A, though the final standings will depend on the outcome of the other group matches. The Rising Stars will now turn their attention to their next match against Rwanda on October 10, 2024, at KMC Stadium, kicking off at 4:00 p.m.
