Evans Matiro Watenya, an ICT officer working at the Cooperative University of Kenya has been arrested by The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) after demanding a Kshs. 50,000 bribe from a student.
The said University student is due for graduation in December 2024 and had complained of an anomaly in her examination results as captured in the University portal
While confirming the arrest, EACC Spokesperson Eric Ngumbi said that the complainant reportedly attained a degree classification of Second Class Honours Upper Division which was mysteriously changed in the portal to Second Class Honours Lower Division. The student, a female, opted to inquire from the ICT Department.
This is where Mr Watenya, sensing an opportunity for quick cash, offered to ‘correct’ the anomaly in exchange for a Kshs 50,000 motivation.
Unable to raise the amount, the complainant reported the matter to the EACC who upon verification of the allegations mounted an operation and arrested the suspect within the University.
The suspect had already pocketed Kshs. 30,000 as downpayment for the task at hand
The suspect is currently cooling off his heels at Kilimani Police Station after he was processed at the EACC
