Morara Kebaso, a vocal critic of President William Ruto’s administration, was arraigned in court and released on a Ksh. 50,000 cash bail, with a case mention set for October 4. Kebaso faces charges of cyber harassment under Section 27 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act 2018, accused of tarnishing the reputation of businessman David Langat.
According to the charge sheet filed on October 1, Kebaso allegedly posted false information on his X (formerly Twitter) account on September 28, 2024, with the intent to discredit Langat.
The charge sheet quotes Kebaso as claiming, “William Ruto approached DL Langat and told him he desperately needed more money for the campaign. DL Langat used his properties as security and took big loans to help his friend. Right now DL Langat is being auctioned by banks, and the person buying the properties is William Ruto. To make it worse, William Ruto has used his power to undervalue the properties to buy them at a cheaper price. That is the kind of person you’re dealing with. He has no friend.”
Kebaso’s defense team has raised concerns over the legitimacy of the charges, questioning both the identity of the complainant and the basis for criminal action.
Prior to his arrest, Kebaso reported being trailed by individuals he identified as government agents, following his nationwide efforts to expose stalled government projects and alleged corruption. Despite receiving threats and being followed by suspicious vehicles, Kebaso remains resolute in his activism.
“If I worry too much, I will not be able to continue my work,” Kebaso said, adding that his phone had been tracked and suspicious activity had been observed near his residence.
The High Court is set to hear the case on October 4, with Kebaso and his legal team preparing to defend against the charges.
