Members of Parliament from the Mt. Kenya region are now growing wary of the backlash they might receive from their supporters on the ground in the wake of an impeachment motion that is yet to be tabled before the National Assembly.

A section of the leaders, speaking on condition of anonymity to RTC News, now claim that the task might ultimately prove to be Herculean.

“The motion is ready but now like the proverb which asks; who gets to put the bell on the cat’s neck? Hapo ndio mambo ya mulima imekuwa ngumu.” Quipped one of the MPs

RTC News understands that the MPs’ fear is informed by simmering dissent from voters in the Mt. Kenya region, who view the mission to impeach DP Gachagua as a ploy driven by Mt. Kenya outsiders under the guise of their local leaders.

The Northern MPs Factor

But even as the MPs grow cold feet, there are suggestions to have little-known MPs from the Northern Kenya region to table the impeachment motion. This move, the Mt Kenya MPs believe will cushion them from any eventualities that may arise from the ground as far as the Mt Kenya voting block is concerned.

The movers of the motion believe that the powerful hand behind it is hellbent on having a Mt Kenya hand to do his bidding. This is believed to be geared towards creating the perception that the second in command has no firm grip on the Mountain.

“This one will have to go through some of our brothers from the North who have no affiliation whatsoever to our region. But the problem is that yule anatumana hataki kusikia hii maneno.” Added the MP

The Divisive Factor

The motion is continuously dividing MPs. A few days ago close to 50 MPs drawn from either side of the political divide that is UDA and ODM met with the mind to quell and stall Mr. Gachagua’s impeachment.

The Gachagua impeachment saga has equally drawn in some 300 MCAs from the Mt Kenya region who by yesterday met at a hotel in Murang’a, in what was touted as a mobilization drive towards the support of Professor Kithure Kindiki as the region’s political kingpin

“MCAs welfare is a stalled project which we believe, we have tried everyone we have tried every other person and we have not seen any fruits and we are saying even if it means going through professor Kithure Kindiki so that the welfare of the MCAs of this country can be sorted so be it.” Stated one of the MCAS

However, some of the MCAs who attended the meeting claim the organizers of the event masked their real intentions and duped them into believing it was a developmental gathering

“Tumefika sisi sote tulikuwa tumejaa hapa lakini ile agenda tulikuwa tumeitiwa jana si agenda ile tumeikuta leo kwa meza.” Complained one MCA.

“Na hii vile tumeona ni njama ya mbali ya kukuja ku-undermine Deputy President and we as MCAs and leaders hapa mashinani, Hilo hatutakubali.” Stated another MCA.

Earlier on as the MCAs meeting ensued, one of the tough-talking voices in DP Gachagua’s corner, Cate Waruguru took to her X handle and called out the MCAs reminding them of the possible wrath from the proverbial ‘Mt. Kenya ground’

“It’s your turn to sip on the confidential vote head offered by the exterior secretary. Ensure you don’t undervalue your night meetings allowances. These sponsored meetings held at Kitusuru & the one currently ongoing at  Nokras Sagana should temporarily ease your hunger. Remember to split the betrayal fee being offered with your electorates. Your workstations are much closer to the grassroots. Hope mnaambia mtu ukweli vile ground iko.” Stated Waruguru.

Equally, a host of the Njuri Ncheke elders who also broke ranks with DP Gachagua are facing a backlash. The elders who gathered in their numbers threw their weight behind Mr. Kindiki whom they say is better suited to present the region’s issues before the president. Locals from the region however believe the elders have failed to read the signs of times

“Someone should wake up these old men and tell them we are past their endorsements. They should just wait on marriage and burial ceremonies but on political issues, we have now been awakened.” Stated Daniel, a resident of Mt. Kenya.

DP Gachagua’s Silence

But as everyone and about anyone continues tripping over themselves trying to find a suitable corner from which to sit as far as DP Gachagua’s impeachment is concerned, the man himself has kept a low profile for the past two days. He even skipped a meeting between President Ruto and MPs from his backyard State House yesterday.

At around 5PM on Tuesday, there were reports that Mr. Gachagua had planned to hold a press briefing at his Karen residence. The reports were however untruthful as his communications team clarified there were no such plans.

All eyes are fixated on the self-made Mt. Kenya Kingpin and what his next moves will be.

DP Gachagua’s impeachment push first mooted a few months ago, was put on ice by President William Ruto, who urged MPs during a meeting at State House to focus on the greater good.
