As the countdown to the 2027 general elections intensifies, the political temperatures in Kirinyaga County are already boiling. A new opinion poll by Kenyatrack has revealed the front-runners in what promises to be one of the most closely watched gubernatorial races in Central Kenya. With voters hungry for impactful leadership and tangible development, three names are dominating conversations across tea farms, marketplaces, and social media threads: Chomba wa Ndau, Purity Ngirici, and Kamau Murango.

Chomba wa Ndau: The Grassroots Hurricane

Leading the pack with a commanding 79% approval rating is Chomba wa Ndau, a relative newcomer who has stormed the political scene with a bottom-up approach that resonates powerfully with everyday voters. Known for his transparent, development-first leadership, Chomba has managed to strike a chord with the youth and rural populations alike. His hands-on engagement with boda boda riders, church groups, and youth organizations has built him an image of a leader who doesn’t just talk development he lives it.

Chomba’s savvy use of local dialects and relatable social media content has made him a darling of the youth, while his clean image sets him apart in a political environment often clouded by scandal. In a county where people are tired of recycled promises, Chomba feels like a fresh page—and voters are taking notice.

Purity Ngirici: The Comeback Queen

Trailing closely at 67% is former Woman Representative Purity Ngirici, a seasoned political player with a legacy rooted in women’s empowerment and fearless independence. After a bold departure from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), Ngirici has built a brand based on defiance and grassroots loyalty.

Her network among women groups, small traders, and the urban poor remains formidable. Many see her as a stabilizing force with the experience to navigate both county and national politics. Yet, despite her popularity, breaking past Chomba’s momentum will require more than past credentials—it’ll take innovation and a narrative that captures the current mood of a county leaning toward change.

Kamau Murango: The Silent Strategist

In third place is Kamau Murango, the current Senator, polling at 54%. A methodical operator with strong ties to the Kenya Kwanza government, Murango has built his reputation on agricultural reforms and developmental lobbying, particularly benefiting rice farmers and the rural economy.

Murango’s alignment with national power structures could work to his advantage, especially in delivering high-budget projects. His church and grassroots engagements show he’s aware that visibility matters—but he’s still struggling to energize the base like Chomba or inspire loyalty like Ngirici. In a race increasingly driven by personality and presence, Murango’s technocratic appeal might need a more populist polish.

What Voters Are Saying

The Kenyatrack survey, conducted from June 25 to July 25, 2025, sampled 2,076 registered voters through randomized telephone interviews. With a demographic balance of 55% rural and 45% urban respondents, the poll provides a revealing snapshot of the electorate’s current leanings. Notably, a large chunk of support for Chomba and Ngirici comes from youth aged 18–34, an age group that made up 34% of the sample a powerful reminder of the generational shift in Kenya’s political landscape.

Beyond the Top Three

While the governor’s race grabs headlines, the poll also sheds light on the Mwea Constituency, where incumbent Kabinga wa Ciira leads with 65%, closely followed by newcomer Mary Maingi at 60%. Both have records of local development, Kabinga with rice-sector reforms and Maingi with infrastructure and health initiatives, making that contest one to watch.

With just two years to go, Kirinyaga’s 2027 gubernatorial race already feels like a referendum on leadership styles: disruptive innovation versus seasoned experience versus institutional pragmatism. Chomba wa Ndau’s meteoric rise signals a county itching for something new. Whether that hunger translates into actual votes or simply disrupts the usual political equations remains to be seen.

One thing is clear: in Kirinyaga, 2027 won’t be politics as usual.
