The Council of Governors (CoG) has moved swiftly to oust Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga from his position as Vice Chair following his controversial remarks on the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

In a dramatic turn of events, the Council held a special sitting on Tuesday where it unanimously voted to strip Kahiga of his leadership role, terming his utterances “reckless, untimely, and unspeakable” during a period of national mourning.

“The sentiments by Governor Kahiga were personal and do not represent the views or values of the Council of Governors,” said CoG Chairperson Ahmed Abdullahi in a strongly worded statement. “We therefore disassociate ourselves in totality and condemn these remarks.”

The Council also extended an apology to the Odinga family on behalf of all 47 county governments, expressing solidarity with Kenyans mourning the death of the veteran opposition leader and statesman.

“We continue to mourn with the family and reaffirm our respect, support, and readiness to offer any assistance required,” Abdullahi said.

The CoG is expected to convene another meeting in the coming days to elect a new vice chair.

Kahiga, known for his outspoken nature, has faced mounting backlash since his comments went viral, with many leaders and citizens accusing him of insensitivity at a time when the nation was in grief.

The Council further urged all leaders to exercise restraint and uphold national values in their public statements, warning that divisive rhetoric undermines unity and respect during moments of national sorrow.

“Leaders must always be guided by the principles of good governance as enshrined in our Constitution,” Abdullahi emphasized.
