The race for Kiambu’s top seat in 2027 is already shaping up to be one of the most competitive contests in the country. A new Kenya Track survey places three candidates at the centre of the battle: businessman-turned-politician Patrick Wainaina (Jungle), incumbent governor Kimani Wamatangi, and former Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a.

Patrick Wainaina, popularly known as Jungle, emerges as the people’s favourite, riding on his strong business roots in Thika. As the founder of Jungle Nuts, his reputation as a job creator and philanthropist resonates powerfully with voters in Thika, Ruiru, and Juja. His track record of funding schools, hospitals, and community projects has cemented his grassroots appeal. Wainaina’s campaign leans heavily on his promise of industrial growth, youth empowerment, and self-reliance, qualities that position him as a candidate unshackled from political “godfathers.”

Close on his heels is Governor Kimani Wamatangi, who draws strength from his dual role as sitting governor (2022–2027) and his long tenure as Kiambu senator. Wamatangi commands loyalty in Gatundu and rural Kiambu, where his political machinery remains formidable. His scholarship programs, school support projects, and healthcare initiatives have solidified his credibility. Moreover, his links with national leaders give him a strategic advantage with voters who value government networks and continuity in leadership.

The third force shaking up the race is Alice Ng’ang’a, who is emerging as the “fresh face” alternative in the gubernatorial lineup. Known for her outspoken, approachable style, Ng’ang’a enjoys solid backing among women’s groups, youth networks, and church communities, particularly in Limuru and neighbouring constituencies. Her focus on women and youth empowerment is winning her traction in urban areas where voters are increasingly seeking change from the old guard.

While former governor James Nyoro also features in the race, the survey places him behind the top three. His policy-driven approach appeals to elites and professionals, but his limited grassroots mobilization and mixed reviews from his previous tenure weaken his overall standing.

The survey highlights a county split along zonal lines, Wainaina dominating Thika, Wamatangi firm in Gatundu, and Ng’ang’a rising in Limuru. With no single candidate enjoying uniform support across the county, alliances and cross-regional strategies will likely determine who clinches victory in 2027. One thing is clear: Kiambu is headed for a bruising, high-stakes gubernatorial showdown.
