President Ruto and Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz

President William Ruto has once again found himself in the mud as the German Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs flagged as false a report put out by the BBC World News on its X platform.

The report which was titled ‘Germany to welcome 250,000 Kenyans in labour deal’ was immediately deleted after  a response by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs which stated in quote:

“This information is clearly false. The agreement between Germany and Kenya does not include any number or quotas of skilled workers who will have an opportunity to work in Germany.”

The BBC article was however anchored on statements by president William Ruto just days after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s  visit to Nairobi in 2023

‘’I was in Saudi Arabia; the German chancellor was in Kenya a few months ago and tonight I am flying to Germany because he promised employment opportunities for 200,000 Kenyans and I have to go organise for that.” Said Ruto in November 2023

The response by Germany’s Internal Affairs Ministry comes in the wake of a growing anti-immigration sentiment in Europe.

Kenya signed a deal with Germany on Friday to share labour, talent, and mobility.

The agreement seeks to provide a framework for cooperation and information exchange on labour mobility, apprenticeships, student training, labour market needs, employment, employee welfare, and the readmission and return of workers.

The BBC has since rectified the article and uploaded a fresh one stating that the German government has said the deal does not specify the number of workers allowed in.

President Ruto on Sunday announced that the first recruitment exercise for Kenyans willing to work in Germany will be conducted from the 27th of October.
